Managing stress can be a daily battle- especially as busy moms. We have Long to-do lists, busy schedules, difficult situations, and unexpected setbacks- because well kids. We’ve all been there and it effects all of us! Everyone feels stress from time to time but it can have a huge impact on your health. And 7 out of 10 people say that stress has impacted their health within the last month. We generally know how stress affects our mood, but if we neglect our mental health, stress can often become a vicious and unhealthy cycle.
How Does Stress Affect Your Health
It’s important to know that stress isn’t always a bad thing. Stress is actually a normal reaction of the body- yes read that again, stress is NORMAL!
Short-term stress, or stress in the moment, keeps us alert and motivated to avoid danger, and once we’re out of a stressful event our body can return to its normal state. BUT- here comes the but- stress can become a problem if it’s prolonged or repeated. Chronic or long term stress can keep our bodies in a heightened state of alertness with high levels of stress hormones. 1: MOVE YOUR BODY!
Engaging in physical activity is highly effective in managing stress as it increases endorphins, aids in mental clarity, and boosts neuroprotective chemicals that help slow down brain cell degeneration and promote new brain cell formation. Regular exercise has also been proven to lower cortisol and adrenaline levels, the body's primary stress hormones. For busy moms who are feeling overwhelmed by the idea of adding exercise to their schedules, remember, it doesn't have to be a long, dedicated session. Simply focus on incorporating movement into your daily routine, whether it's walking to check the mail, playing with your kids, or any other form of physical activity. Every little bit helps in reducing stress.
2. Practice mindfulness techniques.
Mindfulness can be defined as simply paying attention to what’s around you in the present moment. Take 10 to 15 minutes out of the day for meditation, prayer, deep breathing exercises, or muscle relaxation techniques- heck even just carving out that 10 to 15 minutes to sit in silence and DO NOTHING. These can help you to calm your mind and body to lower stress. This time can also be used to identify any stressors in your life and remove them if possible- or figure out a solution if it cannot be instant. This is the time for you to think about how to set boundaries, say no to additional commitments, avoid stressful situations, and make time for much needed self-care.
