Traveling as a busy mom can sometimes feel overwhelming. From packing and planning to ensuring your kids have everything they need, along with yourself! The travel experience can quickly turn chaotic. However, after years of trial and error, and constantly being on the go, I’ve developed a set of mindful travel tips that help me stay calm and enjoy our adventures. Here’s how you can find your travel flow too.
Embrace the Art of Packing Light
Packing can be a significant hurdle for busy moms. I used to cram my suitcase with everything imaginable, convinced I'd need each item - and because I want to bring this "just incase." Every single time I pack I notice it now gets lighter and lighter because the statement is true, "less is more."
For example, packing general colored pants and then mix and matching them with shirts allows you to have more outfit options, without additional clothing items. I also make sure that the toiletry items that I use are toxin free and safe for everyone to use! This helps to eliminate the multitude of toiletry items that takes up massive space in luggage. Here you will find all of my favorite toxin free personal care items that can be used for kids and adults alike!
I also ensure that I have part of my suitcase designated for my kids clothing and the other side of it for me. I will pack socks, tank tops, undergarments, etc. last and fit them in the little holes that I see so they don't take up prime retail space in my suitcase.
When it comes to having items to occupy little minds during long travel I have found that a mix between electronics, craft/coloring, and easy to pack "toys" are best. I will always make sure I have one NEW toy that I get for each trip- something small and affordable because new items keep children entertained for hours longer than something they have seen. I have an entire list for travel must haves with kids! Be sure to check it out if you are looking for new ideas. Life for us is like a constant game of Tetris and packing for trips is no different.
Create a Detailed Itinerary with Flexibility
While it’s essential to have a plan, flexibility is equally important, especially with kids. I love crafting a travel itinerary that includes our must-see attractions while ensuring we have ample downtime. For instance, I will preschedule and plan our must sees and leave additional room for pivoting, relaxing etc. I am a recovering control freak who wanted to plan everything but with kids, that is just not the case. However, not planning anything will sometimes leave you feeling like you have missed out on things or not made the most of your trips. Studies show that unplanned moments often lead to the most cherished memories so having a happy medium is key to overall enjoyment.
When we went to Disney last year, I had a lot planned but I also allowed for space and flexibility to do what we found brought our daughter the most joy. Even though we may not have seen every little thing that there was to see, we got to see exactly what SHE needed to see, without the added pressure of meeting out itinerary to a tee.
Involve the Kids in Planning
Involving my daughter in the travel planning process has greatly reduced my stress and increased their excitement. She is only 4 and plays and active role in planning what we want to do. When we go to Disney we watch ride videos to determine if its something she would enjoy, when we go to the beach we look at different activities and have her pick two or three to do. This involves kids in the planning process, creating some autonomy and decision making, and takes away the added stress for moms of wondering if the kids will enjoy what they are doing!

Prioritize Mindful Moments
Even amidst the chaos, I make it a point to carve out quiet moments throughout our travels. Early mornings are ideal for this. I will also specifically book a place to stay that promotes that sense of a calm atmosphere in order to decompress from the day's activities. These two things seem so seemingly insignificant but they make a huge difference.
We pre-schedule rest/relaxation days into our trips as well to make sure that we are recharging ourselves between the big adventures. Sometimes people will say "I don't go on vacation to do nothing" but we also don't want to get so burnt out that we are exhausted from the vacation we are on.
I also encourage my daughter to experience "mindful moments and quiet time" These could be as simple as a few minutes spent listening to the sounds of nature or discussing what made her happiest that day. Research shows that practicing mindfulness can reduce stress and enhance our overall travel experience.
Stay Hydrated and Nourished
Nutrition tends to take a backseat while traveling. I make it a priority to pack healthy snacks—think mixed nuts, dried fruit, and granola bars. Whether we are traveling or flying those long travel days seem to go way smoother if we have limited sugar.
Hydration is also crucial. I always carry refillable water bottles and remind my family to drink water regularly- this is not only for hydration but also saves money and is way more convenient. If you are traveling at all, but especially for theme parks, etc. I will get the dye free water flavoring which makes all the difference. If the ability is there we also adding limes and lemons to our water, my daughter included! Instead of relying on fast food and chain restaurants, we look for local restaurants wherever we go! We have an unwritten pact of never eating at chain restaurants (or at least restaurants we have easy access to) while on vacation. This allows us to experience local cuisine which is a highlight of all our travels.
Capture the Unscripted Moments
While documenting our travels is important, some of the most beautiful memories occur outside of the camera’s view. I make a conscious effort to put my phone down and genuinely engage with my family, but at the same time try to capture photos of memories because eventually photos may be all we have to look back on. Regardless though, I highly recommend the balance of capturing photos and living in the moment!
Reflect on Experiences Together
Like I mentioned before at the end of everyday, and upon returning home, I find it meaningful to hold share what our favorite parts of each day and the trip were. What was the most exciting? What surprised us? What made it "the best day ever". This discussion not only strengthens our memories but also fosters family bonding.
As a family we also strive to make sure that we have something to memorialize our trip. We have gotten Christmas ornaments, magnets, stickers, all of the above so that we can keep track of how many amazing places we have been!
Set Realistic Expectations
It’s easy to get caught up in the idea of a perfect getaway, but I’ve learned that realistic expectations keep us grounded. Traveling with kids can lead to surprises, and that’s completely okay.
Instead of stressing over small hiccups, I focus on enjoying the journey. Each moment—planned or not—is part of our adventure, and every experience adds to our family story.
This was a hard concept for me to grasp at first but when I did, I started to view travel and experiences differently!
Finding Joy in the Journey
Traveling as a busy mom doesn’t have to feel chaotic. By adopting mindful practices like packing light, planning with flexibility, and prioritizing special moments, we can transform our trips into enjoyable experiences.
So, as you prepare for your next adventure, keep in mind that being a busy mom doesn't mean sacrificing enjoyment. Embrace these tips and create beautiful family memories. Happy travels!
